In France’s Camargue region, a proposed superhighway project will cause significant urbanisation of land. This would lead to the loss of habitats and agricultural land and negatively impact water quality, quantity, and landscapes. The project is also in direct contradiction with France’s commitments to its climate change objectives.
Currently, plans exist for a high-voltage line project that would span 65 kilometers and require 180 pylons as tall as 15-20-storey buildings. However, this project would pass through 21 Natura 2000 sites as well as 7 national and regional nature reserves. The Camargue region could be severely affected by the cumulative impact of multiple mega-infrastructure projects.
A Task Force has been established after receiving approval from the Steering Committee for the Camargue Red Alert to address this issue. The Task Force includes the MAW secretariat and members and partners from Doğa Derneği, Youth and Environment Europe, and Euronatur Foundation.
